Red onion
Onions (Allium cepa L.), come from Central Asia. It is one of oldest consumed vegetables and it is grown all over the world. Among all the types of this bulb, red onion is one of the most remarkable for its colour and more pronounced sweeter taste than in other types of onions.
It has a big and globe shaped bulb and it is planted in spring and summer. It is slightly spicy and sweeter than other varieties.
They are also known as purple onions because they can acquire purple reddish or violet hues depending on the seeds, soil and other parameters but the colour only appears on the surface of each layer and the flesh is white.
This type of onion is used in cuisine just like any other onions. It can be used for stews and be eaten raw. It is especially appealing for salads, ceviches, etc., mainly for the colour it gives to dishes, but it is also one of the few types of onions which can be eaten raw due to its pleasant taste.
