It is a Brachyura crustacean. It has a dark red oval body which is longer than its width and a shell covered by spikes. It can reach a size of 18 cm in length.
It lives in dark seabeds covered by algae, which they use as camouflage. They mainly feed on algae and starfish. They are caught all over the Mediterranean and in the Atlantic all the way up to the English Channel.
They can be bought alive or cooked but also frozen.
