Peanuts

Arachys hypogaea, or peanuts are an annual plant from the Fabaceae family (also known as Leguminosae), whose legume-like fruits contain seeds which are appreciated in many cuisines. They come from South-America and they grow underground.

Although technically they are legumes, from a nutritional point of view they are considered to be nuts. This is because their fruits don’t have a pulp and the seeds or peanuts are inside a pod that dries and hardens when it ripens.

They are sold roasted in the shell or shelled and they are also used to extract oil from them.
