Cherries or sour cherries are the fruits of morello cherry tree, a tree belonging to the Rosaceae family that can grow up to 20 metres high. This family includes more than 2000 species of herbaceous plants, bushes and trees spread out in template regions around the world. Most of the European fruits, as well as the rose bush, belong to this big family.
There are hundreds of different types of cherries. Their producers classify them according to its (their) taste: sweet or sour. There are also hybrids of sweet and sour cherries, which can be eaten either fresh or cooked in countless ways.
Wild cherries, classified as sour fruit, are called sour cherries and they are predecessors of all the current varieties.
