There are several species from the Passiflorae family that bear edible fruits. The passion fruit or maracujá is among them, with a slightly acid taste and very aromatic. Other climbing plants from the same family are used as decorative plants. The fruit of the yellow passion fruit (P. Edulis flavicarpa) is yellow, shaped like a berry and with a bittersweet taste. The purple passion fruit (P. Edulis sims) is smaller and purple.  The P. Edulis ligularis is another type of passion fruit with an orange, golden or yellow colour with small white dots.

It is mainly composed of water. It has a huge amount of carbohydrates so its caloric value is very high.

Its provitamin A and vitamin C contents are to be highlighted as well as minerals such as potassium, phosphor, and magnesium. The yellow type has more minerals and provitamin A than the purple one.

It also contains a high quantity of fiber, which is great for the intestinal transit and reduces the risk of having certain alterations and illnesses.

It is a sweet fruit, refreshing and easy to eat, rich in antioxidants and whose nutritional value makes it ideal for children, youngsters and adults, sportspeople, pregnant and breastfeeding women and elders.
